Prior to doing the informational Interview - find professionals willing to participate in an email based interview. I posted on Facebook with a google form and had enough participants (45) for my students in 24 hours.

The informational interview must be on a strict timeline for students to complete. They will also schedule their appointment with emailing the professionals and must stick to this appointment. Here is a timeline I give my students (4 days long)
Day 1 -
Day 1 -
- For bell work students create a gmail account (if you school had accounts, great! Have them log in)
- Students take notes on the Informational Interview Worksheet while I present and discuss the Informational PPT
- Students open a Word Document while I talk them through the initial email (making contact) - they introduce themselves, tell the professional how they received their contact information, and let the professional know when to expect and email with questions.
- We then copy from the word document to a new email, type in the professional's email they have been assigned, and the "CC" my email address - then send.
- For bell work students create a Linked In account (the only site not blocked by our district and a professional site)
- Using the website in the PPT, we discuss what appropriate questions for the interview would be
- I show the list provided by Berkeley (on the website) and allow them to use 5 of these questions, they have to come up with 5 of their own
- Students type their questions in a word document, then follow the same procedure as the day before to email their professional and me
- Students who finish early make changes and update their linked in profile (we will use these later)
- For bell work students check their email to receive the answers to their interview questions
- We discuss as a class what a proper follow-up thank you email would look like, then students open MS Word and we type our thank you emails
- Included in the thank you emails is a link to student linked in accounts for the professionals
- Students then complete a form in Moodle about what they learned during this experience
- Students created a Presentation about this project. They were required to include what they had learned about information interviews, what they learned about this career, and if they would enjoy this career (why or why not).
- My class sizes are large, so we began presenting on Day 4, but used a partial Day 5 to finish our presentations.

After students create their resume and cover letter, they are given a black folder to put these items into. I provide them a current local job description for an entry level position that they are applying for. I then have local business professionals conduct mock interviews for each student. Students who are not interviewing on that particular day or time slot are working on their electronic career portfolios.
Performance Indicator 1.4 - Recognize and discuss the academic and professional benefits of participating in CTSO and professional organizations
